Filipino Greetings and Goodbyes

Learning a variety of Filipino greetings can go a long way toward becoming fluent in the language. Fortunately, since greetings are a key part of small talk, you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice your new greeting vocabulary every time you meet up with a Filipino-speaking friend.

Saying Hello in Filipino

Hoy! ➔ Hey!

Tagal na ah! ➔ It's been a while! (like, long time no see)

Kumusta ➔ Hello


Timely Greetings in Filipino

Magandang umaga (po). ➔ Good morning.

Magandang hapon (po). ➔ Good afternoon.

Magandang gabi (po). ➔ Good evening.

Magandang gabi (po) sa inyong lahat. ➔ Good evening to all.

* po is added when talking to older people as a show of respect.


Saying Goobye in Filipino

Paalam ➔ Goodbye

Ingat ka! ➔ Take care!

Magkita tayo bukas. ➔ See you tomorrow.

Magkita tayo mamaya. ➔ See you later.


Other Useful Filipino Greetings

Kinagagalak kong makilala ka. ➔ Nice to meet you.

Masaya akong makilala ka. ➔ Nice to meet you.

Maligayang Pasko. ➔ Merry Christmas.
