If you are interested, I'd love to share what I know about Japanese with you. I don't know everything because I'm just learning, but if you are interested, I'd still love to help. Also, if you are a Japanese expert (or even a Japanese semi-competent like myself) we could still exchange messages to help each other become more fluent.

Whichever, let me know.

By the way, is there a private messaging on this forum? I didn't even check. If so, feel free to message me that way, other wise, we can use this thread or set up another depending on how you wanted to do this.

Yea, there is PM'ing on this forum, you just have to click on the little "speech bubble" looking thing under the names beside the posts, or go into a person's profile. You can send messages that way too. That sounded confusing, but I hope it made some kind of sense to you.

I sent you a message by the way, since Japanese is my language of choice for learning at the moment. Like you I'm by no means an expert, but I am getting pretty good at understanding most of what I hear in the Japanese tv shows now. I've also been learning to read Japanese writing, but that's coming along a little slower. Horray for furigana is all I have to say!

Anyway, check your forum mail, and lets get this language exchange rolling!

I see what you mean and I found your message. I sent you one back, so don't forget to look ;)

Also, if anyone else wants to partner up on Japanese learning with me, either post here or send me a message... the more the merrier! Wow, until just now I didn't know how strange the word merrier looks. Or maybe it's just me?

Nice to meet you Anna :)

Have you tried listening closely to the pronunciations on Japanese television or radio? There are many websites where you can watch programs from Japan and I've found that they are a great way to improve pronunciations.

I often try to repeat what I hear while I'm listening too.

Im not really
learning japanese but i understand so much after constantly watching anime such as death note and vampire night :)  it can really help cause you listen to pronunciation and your also understanding things eg. they say moshi moshi when answering the phone but konnichiwa when saying hello.
good luck with the katagana or hirigana (whatever the writing is called) one of the best ways to learn writing is to make a story about the charactor eg :カ (ka) ka is カ because you are cutting the bread :D

Wow, I haven't been here in forever. Just stumbled across the site again today, and remembered about the forum. Just so you know, I'm still focused on learning Japanese. I just love this language so much! It's exciting when you learn something new, isn't it?

It's great too, because my family knows about my love of Japanese, I even got some gifts at Christmas that relate :)

I got a nice book to help me with my reading, and I got a dvd to help me with my listening/pronunciation skills! I still have so much more to learn, but I love the challenge! Bring it on :)

And Vivian, hello! Thank you for the good luck wishes! Sorry I couldn't welcome you sooner, but if you stop by again, maybe we can talk some more. And yes, that is a great way to help remember the katakana and hiragana. I've got most of the hiragana memorized now. And maybe like half of the katakana.

I've got a cheatsheet that I use when I read my Japanese books, and I find that I need it less and less now. But, since the katakana shows up less in the text than the hiragana, I makes sense that I'd learn the hiragana faster.
